The YC is a multidisciplinary dance company founded by Artistic Director Kate Wallich with Co-Director Lavinia Vago in 2010. We are based in Seattle, WA.
Our work has been most notably presented/commissioned by Velocity Dance Center's Made in Seattle, Next Fest NW and Fall Kick Off, On the Board’s Northwest New Works Festival and 12 Minutes Max, Northwest Dance Project, Reverb Dance Festival NY, Bumbershoot, City Arts Festival, Conduit, The Frye Art Museum, and The Seattle International Dance Festival among others. The YC has received creative development residencies with Velocity Dance Center, The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, MANA Contemporary/Armitage Gone! Dance, and On the Board's Performance Production Program.
COLLABORATORS & BIOGRAPHIES
KATE WALLICH artistic director+choreographer / Kate is a dance artist based in Seattle since 2007. Raised in Tecumseh, Michigan, she received her training from Interlochen Arts Academy and Cornish College of the Arts. In 2010, she began making dance performance and films mostly in collaboration with her company, The YC. Her work has been commissioned and presented nationally and internationally by On the Boards, Velocity Dance Center, The Rauschenberg Foundation, MANA Contemporary, Springboard Danse Montreal, Northwest Dance Project, Cornish College of the Arts, Henry Art Gallery, Bumbershoot, Conduit, City Arts and The Frye Art Museum among others. She has also taught workshops and held lec/dems around the collaborations involved in her work in Seattle, Montreal, and New York. Kate has received awards and grants from 4Culture, Artist Trust, The Glenn H. Kawasaki Foundation and Seattle Magazine.
LAVINIA VAGO co-director + dancer / Lavinia is a dance artist from Italy. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cornish College of the Arts. Lavinia performed with Sidra Bell Dance New York. She is currently working with Rubberbandance in Montréal and Loni Landon Projects in NYC. Lavinia is co-director and dancer with The YC.
ANDREW BARTEE dancer + creative collaborator / Andrew Bartee is from Everett, Washington. He studied on scholarship at Paciﬁc Northwest Ballet School and attended summer courses at Paciﬁc Northwest Ballet School and the School of American Ballet. He was the ﬁrst recipient of the Flemming Halby Exchange with the Royal Danish Ballet School and a 2007 Princess Grace Award recipient. Mr. Bartee joined Paciﬁc Northwest Ballet in 2008. In the past two years Andrew has created works for PNB’s NEXT STEP choreographers's showcase, The Seattle International Dance Festival, Ballet Tuscon's Roots of Choreography Showcase, and Velocity's Fall Kick Off. Andrew performs regularly with Whim W’Him, Kate Wallich, and The YC.
MATT DREWS dancer + creative collaborator / Matt is a movement artist from Colorado. He holds a BFA in Dance from Cornish College of the Arts. He has worked with tEEth Performance and Ate9 dANCE cOMPANY. His choreography has been presented in the Seattle International Dance Festival, Northwest New Works (On the Boards), and Nextfest Northwest (Velocity Dance Center). Matt is currently collaborating with Saint Genet, The Pendleton House, Modern Recollections, and Kate Wallich and The YC in Seattle.
WALDEAN NELSON dancer + creative collaborator / Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Waldean trained at the Dance Theater of Harlem, The Ailey School, Jacob's Pillow, Philadanco, Bryn Mawr College and Springboard Danse Montreal. In 2009, He received his B.A. in Growth and Structure of Cities (conc. in Architecture) and a minor in Dance from Haverford College and Bryn Mawr College. Waldean has been a member of Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, Jose Navas/Compagnie Flak, and Camille A. Brown & Dancers. He is currently collaborating with The 605 Collective in Vancouver, BC.
JOHNNY GOSS composer + sound designer / Johnny Goss is a composer, sound designer and multi-instrumentalist. He is owner, producer and technical engineer at Dandelion Gold in West Seattle and a member of the nationally recognized duo Cock & Swan, which specializes in mesmerizing rhythmic loops and vintage electronic experimentalism. In the past ten years he has been a resource and advisor for the Seattle music community, recording artists like La Luz, Lonesome Shack, Mike Dumovitch, and Brad Dunn.
LENA SIMON composer + sound designer / The instrumental/electronic music of composer Lena Simon builds space and atmosphere by means of sound. She graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with a BM in music composition. In addition to her solo project K A I R O S , Lena has worked/recorded with Pollens, La Luz, Throw Me The Statue, Katie Kate, Mary Lambert, Tomten, and Gamelan Pacifica.
JACOB ROSEN cinematographer / Jacob Rosen is a cinematographer who's work has been shown nationally and internationally. He currently resides in Seattle, WA.
COLIN FRAKER designer / Colin is a furniture designer and maker. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
